Mary Harman

Mary is a regular at the coffee shop I work at. The room turns brighter the second she walks in. Her smile is radiant & I knew there was something special about her. I asked her to be on Femme Friday & her responses blew me away. She pulls inspiration from the roots - life itself. It's so important to remember what our purpose is & to bring forth life through what makes us happy. We all have something brilliant to offer the world, a gift designed just for us. As Mary perfectly puts it, "we owe this to ourselves & the world".

What inspired you to create your own brand?

I am still in the process of creating my brand— to me, the journey is just as important as the destination. The source of my inspiration stems from my bone-deep desire to produce inspiration through art, photographical captures of our geographical playground, and knowledge through bi-lingual modality (ASL and English). To be alive is such a precious gift from our Creator and I want our fellow beings to be able to cherish that gift. Members of the Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing community do not have equal access to general knowledge because of barriers constructed by society so I aspire to increase that access. Knowledge is the greatest equalizer. I’m in the late stages of finalizing the existence of my LLC, which aims to bridge gaps between the Deaf and hearing world.

What message are you trying to put out into the world with what you create?

Life has so many gifts for us and there is so much yet to be enjoyed — we all must discover what makes our world revolve—whether that is art, healthcare, nature-related activities, literacy, and so forth— and turn that passion into fuel to generate bettered lives all around us. Knowledge and the enjoyment that comes hand-in-hand is meant to be shared.

What do you tell yourself when you’re stuck in a rut?

This mentality is alway tough to get out of. I always tell myself that the ruttiness is transient, I am not stuck, and that this is an opportunity for me to learn what does not work, which automatically puts me closer to what does work. I like to pair mental discipline with physical action of some type. When I’m feeling really rutty, I give myself mental reminders then I go outside. I go for a run. There’s just something about physical exertion that produces happy hormones— works for me every time.

What is your definition of a “boss babe”?

My definition is simple: any girl who is unapologetically female and strives to actualize her passion and vision.

Why is it important for girls to find their own voice and share it with the world?

This is so important because our voices have been excluded for such a long time. We now have more opportunities to shape the future and that also means we’re able to influence history. The female perspective is such a powerful agent of change and the world is a better place when our perspectives are not only shared but also circulated throughout societies. We owe this to ourselves and the world.

Do you have anything else you’d like to say?

You must serve a purpose that is bigger than yourself: that’s the only key to sustainable growth and happiness.
